What is NFC, and how do tap-to-pay payments work?
NFC stands for near field communication, a short-range wireless technology that lets a card or phone exchange payment data with a reader held a couple of inches away. It's what makes tap-to-pay work. A tap runs on the same security foundation as a chip card, producing a one-time code for each transaction, and it finishes in about a second.
The name sounds technical. The idea isn't: two devices, almost touching, having a very brief and very guarded conversation.
What actually happens during a tap?
The reader constantly broadcasts a weak radio field. When a contactless card enters that field, the field itself powers a tiny chip and antenna inside the card. No battery, no charging, which is why a flat piece of plastic can do this.
Once powered, the card and the terminal run the same kind of exchange a chip card runs when you insert it. The card proves it's genuine and produces a cryptogram, a single-use code tied to that one transaction. The terminal sends the result off for approval through the normal card networks. From your side of the counter, nothing changes: same approval, same receipt, same deposit.
A phone tap adds one layer. The phone stores a device-specific token instead of the real card number, and the customer approves the payment with a fingerprint, a face scan, or a passcode before the phone will play its part.
Is tapping as safe as inserting the chip?
Yes, in the way that matters. Both use the same one-time-code approach, so the data from a tap can't be replayed to build a counterfeit card. Neither hands over reusable static data the way the old magnetic stripe did. A phone tap arguably goes further, since the real card number isn't even on the device and the owner has to approve each payment.
Tap is not a shortcut around security. It's the same lock, opened faster.
Can someone steal a card number by standing near a customer?
This worry comes up a lot, so let's treat it seriously. The range is deliberately tiny, a couple of inches, not across a room. More to the point, a payment can't be collected into thin air. Money from a card transaction goes to a merchant account, which is registered, named, and paid out to a real bank account. Running a scam through one leaves a paper trail pointed at yourself, and every charge shows up on the cardholder's statement, where it can be disputed.
Could a determined person with special equipment cause mischief at very close range? Researchers have staged demonstrations. But as street crime it makes little sense, which is why the practical risks worth your attention are the older ones: skimmers on readers and numbers written on paper.
What does a store need to accept tap?
An NFC-capable reader, and that's essentially it. Once the reader supports contactless, taps from cards and phone wallets work without any extra signup or configuration on your end. Does tap-to-pay work if the customer's phone battery is dead?
A phone wallet generally needs the phone to be on, so a dead battery means no phone tap. It's rarely a lost sale, though. The physical card in their pocket still dips or taps, and cash still works. The register doesn't care which one wins.
Are there spending limits on tap payments?
It depends on the card and the country. Some issuers and some regions cap contactless amounts, and when a tap goes over a limit the terminal simply asks for the card to be inserted instead. Your processor can tell you what applies to your setup.
Do tap transactions cost more to process?
A tap is a card-present transaction, the same category as a dip, and the wallet providers don't add a store-side fee. What you pay depends on your processing plan rather than on how the card touched the reader. Confirm the details with your processor.
