Phone wallets go a step further: the phone holds a token rather than the real card number, and the customer approves each payment on their own device.
Tap is chip security at tap speed. There's no security discount for the convenience.

Frequently asked questions
Do all cards support tap-to-pay?
No. Contactless cards carry a small wave symbol and an antenna inside; older cards have neither, and those still need to dip. Banks have been reissuing contactless cards for years, so the share grows on its own. Your reader handles both without any setting changes.
Is tap-to-pay only for small purchases?
No. In some countries and on some cards, contactless amounts are capped, and larger sales prompt an insert or a PIN instead. The terminal manages that on its own. For most everyday store transactions the tap simply goes through. Ask your processor what applies to you.
Will accepting contactless require new software?
Usually it just requires a reader with NFC. If your payments run through a POS system, the reader and register should be set up to talk to each other, which is a question for your processor rather than a software project for you.
